Arts Extend Cumbria

A pilot project investigating the role of the arts and culture on Extended Services

What:
A pilot project to explore the role of arts and culture on Extended Services

Where: Dalton-in-Furness, After school dance clubCumbria

When: Jan-Dec 2007

Who: The programme partners are Arts Council England, MLA North West, Dowdales School,, Cumbria Arts in Education and the following primary schools: Askam Primary School, Burlington School, Dalton St Mary's Primary School, George Romney Junior School, Ireleth St Peter's Primary School, Lindal and Marton Primary School, and Our Lady of the Rosary C Primary School.

How: Through consultation with the schools involved, the focus of the programme was to develop more dance opportunities for Key Stage 2 children in the cluster. Four after school dance clubs took place at Askam Primary School and Dowdales School. To build capacity of the cluster to deliver future dance activity, 4 adult leaders and 5 young leaders (Year 10 gifted and talented students from Dowdales) were recruited to develop their own skills in leading dance with primary age children.

This training was led by Ludus Dance, a leading dance-in-education company. The programme also included professional development in dance for the teachers, museum, library and archive staff and local private dance school tutors in the community. It is hoped that after school dance clubs will continue beyond the life of the project through the cluster working together.

What next? Further opportunities for the schools to engage with museums, libraries and archives will be offered in the form of professional development for teachers and visits for parents and children to museums in Cumbria and beyond. Teachers will also have the chance to work more closely with a museum, library or archive through the Learning Links programme, managed by MLA North West.
