Portrait of a Nation

Young people across the UK have laid down a challenge for their generation to explore and celebrate the impact that their cultural roots have had on their values and sense of identity.

Portrait of a Nation is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the UK’s youth to explore and express what is special to them about where they come from, their local culture, community and identity.

This unique campaign is being run during Liverpool’s year-long reign as the European City of Culture 2008 by the Liverpool Culture Company, 17 other partner cities and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A series of exciting events by young people in 18 cities will showcase young peoples' arts and heritage projects, revealing what being British means to them and what they want it to mean in the future. Dance, music, theatre, painting and photography are among the many ways in which this exploration of identity will be expressed. Everything will culminate in a spectacular festival in December 2008 in Liverpool, bringing the curtain down on the European Capital of Culture 2008 celebrations. Each of the 17 partner cities will be hosted by Liverpool youth groups, as communities celebrate their own cultural identity alongside that of the host city. Visit the website for full details.
