Best Practice
According to a recent Arts Council publication Providing the Best, the following policies and procedures should be in place when working with children and young people:

  • Equal opportunities policy, with procedures for monitoring targets and for recruitment
  • Child protection policy and procedures for safeguarding children (legally defined as anyone under 18)
  • Disclosure Certificates, issued by the Criminal Records Bureau, for anyone who will have regular contact with children
  • Risk assessment for each activity
  • Consent from parents and carers, giving permission for children to take part in activities, and address and contact details for each child, if you are responsible for children
  • Permission to use images of children in publications and on websites
  • Health and safety procedures
  • Employers' liability insurance, if you are not part of a local authority or government department
  • Public liability insurance
